What is a Mechanical Bull?
A mechanical bull is a machine-operated ride that replicates the sensation of riding a bull. Mechanical bulls are often fitted with a with bareback rigging, a bronc saddle, or a rope.
To make the experience more lifelike, mechanical bulls may also include heads, horns, real bull hides or imitation body covers and tails. Padded flooring is often installed around the bull in order to prevent injury to those thrown off it.
There are 2 major types of mechanical bulls, electric and hydraulic. Hydraulic bulls may be prone to leaking oil, but may be more responsive and powerful than electric bulls.
How and where are Mechanical Bulls used?
Mechanical Bull rides are used for professional rodeo practice & training, or use at entertainment events. Mechanical bulls have been featured in television productions, movies and music videos.
Mechanical bulls are often used at entertainment events such as amusement parks, cowboy theme parks, state fairs, county fairs, rodeos, carnivals, fundraisers, corporate events and private parties. Mechanical bulls can also be seen at night clubs, bars and restaurants.
A full production may include the use of lights, music, rodeo clowns and an announcer. Bull operators may also take pictures or videotape rides.
How does a Mechanical Bull work?
Most Mechanical bulls remain stationary, while they spin and buck to simulate the experience of riding an actual bull. Mechanical bull rides are not usually automated, but completely controlled by hands-on operators.
A mechanical bull operator uses a control panel with dials or levers to control the motion of the bull. Most commonly 2 different motion controls, a spin motion and a buck motion. Skilled and experienced mechanical bull operators can control speed of the buck and spin to accommodate riders of different levels.
What safety features are common for a Mechanical Bull?
The body of a mechanical bull will commonly be wrapped with dense foam to soften it. Mechanical bulls are most commonly surrounded by an air mattress, to catch riders who may get bucked off the bull.
Arguably the biggest safety feature of all is a highly skilled and experienced operator. Operators learn to control and anticipate the motion of the bull and its riders to prevent injuries.
Are Mechanical Bulls dangerous?
Mechanical bull riders are at risk for significant injury. A signed waiver is usually required to ride a bull. Waivers inform riders there are serious risks to any mechanical bull ride, including this ride, which risks may include injury, permanent disability, disfigurement, or death.
The most commonly injured areas of the body are fingers, hips, groins, ankles, knees, and lower back. The most common injuries as a result of riding mechanical bulls are sprains and contusions. The most common severe injuries are bone fractures and bone dislocation.
The use of drugs and/or alcohol, by either the operator or rider, increases the risk for injuries.
